Grants to Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware nonprofit organizations to improve the lives of women and girls in eligible regions. Preference is given to applicants of color and leadership teams that include women of color. Funding is intended to support organizations that provide leadership training for women currently working in the nonprofit sector and to help girls develop into the leaders of the future. Programs should benefit the residents of the Greater Philadelphia region.

The terms Greater Philadelphia region and region are understood in the context of this RFP to refer to southeastern Pennsylvania counties (Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia) as well as contiguous counties in southern New Jersey (Camden) and Delaware (New Castle).

The Valentine Foundation, through its Valentine Fund for Visionary Leadership, is committed to supporting leadership development for aspiring and executive women leaders of those nonprofit organizations in the region that improve the lives of women and/or girls. In 2021, the Valentine Fund for Visionary Leadership will accept applications for funding to support leadership development initiatives that will make current nonprofit women leaders more effective and develop the next generation of leaders working to improve the quality of life for women and girls in the region.

The purpose of the VFVL is to strengthen the organizations that improve the lives of women and girls in the Greater Philadelphia region by:

  • Making current women leaders more effective,
  • Developing the next generation of women leaders, and
  • Fostering a community of women leaders.

The Valentine Fund for Visionary Leadership understands the characteristics of leadership apart from management and executive authority to include:

  • Demonstration of innovation and entrepreneurial vision (takes initiative, is not risk averse, seeks new solutions, partnerships, tries alternative approaches)
  • Credibility (knowledge of issues from the standpoint of content and policy. Demonstrated capacity for strategic synthesis of knowledge and practice).
  • Demonstration of the capacity to influence others with or without the formal authority or title.
  • Demonstration of the capacity to respect followers, promote their voices, and protect their interests.
  • Exhibition of generosity: Shares knowledge, power, and resources in the interest of an aim.
  • Demonstration of life decisions and actions consistent with a set of core values and ethics.
  • Demonstration of effectiveness. Achievements, even if modest, that reflect intelligence, creativity, vision, advocacy, and a healthy balance of outrage and optimism.
  • Ability to think expansively about long term challenges.
  • Seeks new solutions.

For examples of leadership development initiatives, see page 3 of the RFP in the Supporting Documents section below.

Proposed programs, courses, and/or coaching must have content and goals consistent with the definition of leadership in this RFP. Courses or programs must be directly related to building leadership capacity/characteristics, not merely the acquisition of field-specific content or knowledge.

Estimated Size of Grant:

A total grant pool of $30,000 - $40,000 will be awarded to successful applicants.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Nonprofit organizations with paid staff operating in the region whose primary focus and mission-driven activities serve to benefit women and/or girls either through direct service, advocacy, public policy, or capacity building are eligible to apply for funding from the Valentine Fund for Visionary Leadership.

Consistent with Valentine Foundation’s commitment to support organizations whose primary focus is improving the lives of women and girls, applicant organizations must serve at least 70% female population OR have a program that serves 100% women and/or girls. If the organization is eligible because it has a program specifically for women and/or girls, then any individual leader/s who benefit from this grant funding must have an active role within or responsibility for said program.

Applicants may apply to both Valentine Foundation and the Fund for Visionary Leadership in the same grant year.

The VFVL seeks to support both current and emerging women leaders and will accept nominations for an individual or a group from the eligible organization. Board members may be included in groups only if the group also includes staff members.

Grants will only be made to qualifying organizations and will not be made to individuals.

The Fund for Visionary Leadership is not intended to support tuition associated with academic degree programs.

Funding will not be provided for men working in nonprofits that serve women and girls.
