Grants of up to $25,000 to USA and Canada accredited IHEs and professional societies to promote research careers related to the sciences. Funding is intended to support programs that offer scientists practical experience in preparation for work within and beyond academic settings. Grants may be used by single institutions and institutions working in partnerships.
The Burroughs Wellcome Fund wishes to support demonstration projects that will model affordable, transferable approaches to improving trainees’ readiness for stable, fulfilling careers. Helping trainees understand, acquire, and demonstrate skills that make them ready for complex careers should be the goal of submitted projects.
Projects may be meant to enhance trainees’ understanding of jobs beyond the Academy, or of career trajectories within academe, or of the flexibility of scientists’ intellectual skill set.
Selection will be based on the logic of the proposed activity, its potential impact on trainees’ career preparation, and its potential for being affordably deployed at a larger scale. In the 2021 round, the feasibility of moving the proposed activity to virtual or remote delivery will also be a factor in selection.
